Who Were the Soldiers Who Died in the Fort Hood Floods?

The tragic incident at Fort Hood over the weekend reminds us not to take our safety for granted, unlike these nine soldiers who were lost.

As NBC News reported, the nine soldiers died during a training exercise gone awry as massive flooding swept across the state. As the country has grappled with this loss, we’ve learned more about the nine soldiers who lost their lives. They’re documented below.

Mitchell Winey, a 21-year-old, was a native of Indiana that was majoring in engineering management at West Point Military Academy.

Private Tysheena James was a high school track runner from Jersey City who was also 21 years old, a life lost too soon with so much to live for.

Private Christine Armstrong was a Californian who relocated to Texas two years ago.

Private Zachary Fuller was following in his parents’ footsteps in his career choices, and was only 23 years old. Eddy Gates, “a 20-year-old private from North Carolina was a homecoming queen ‘who worked to help people,’ her mother told NBC News.”

Miguel Angel Colonvazquez was a 38-year-old staff sergeant from Brooklyn, New York who leaves behind four children. He earned 10 achievement and commendation medals following service in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Pfc. Brandon Austin Banner also passed away at only age 22, while Pfc. Zachary Nathaniel Fuller, Pvt. Isaac Lee Deleon, and Yingming Sun also met an untimely death in the training exercise.

State officials are currently investigating the exercise, but our hearts go out to the families that are grieving precious loved ones.
