Tornado Safety

Although tornadoes are less common in south Texas and the Hill Country than in other parts of Texas, they do sometimes occur. Always stay tuned into your television or radio or text message warnings you may get from local TV stations or weather services. Avoid vehicles or mobile homes as they are very unsafe. If you have a basement, that is a  safe place to go, and if  no basement is available, move to an interior location in the middle of your home or shelter such as a bathroom or closet, away from doors and windows. Always take mattresses or pillows to protect your head.

Survival Kits

It’s always a good idea to have a “survival kit” ready because Texas storms come and go very quickly. A survival kit may include flashlights, extra batteries, candles, matches, bottled water, an extra power source for your phone such as a portable charger, emergency first aid supplies, a portable radio, and non-perishable goods. You may want to also keep a copy of emergency phone numbers on hand, extra sets of keys and anything else of importance to help in case severe weather activity occurs.
