George Strait has surprised his fans with the announcement that he’ll be playing a large stadium show in Massachusetts, with Blake Shelton and Cody Johnson (a fellow native Texan) on the bill. The announcement was made on Tuesday, March 19, 2019, and shared on Strait’s Facebook page.

Gillette Stadium, in Foxborough, Massachusetts, will set the stage for the King of Country music, along with Shelton, Johnson, and up-and-comer Caitlyn Smith. The video featuring the announcement begins with Shelton in an interview-type format asking what the gist of the message was. When he realizes it’s about the upcoming show with the Texas country superstar, he does a good job of playing the confused role. “George Strait? George Strait’s retired. He made a huge announcement. He said, ‘I am retiring. I’m not going on tour anymore,’” Shelton says. “If I was doing a show with George Strait, trust me, I would know about it. I dream of things like that,” he added.

Strait does a great job of playing the deadpan role and making it perfectly clear that he’s not retired. Touring is one thing, but he hasn’t failed to keep his following entertained with a Vegas residency as well as new music releases, not to mention the Ohio country music festival he’s headlining! “Yeah, I don’t know where that came from. I guess when I said I wasn’t going to tour anymore, they thought maybe I was retiring, but that was never my intention,” he says after Shelton’s comments. “The Voice? Nah, don’t watch it,” Strait says, alluding to Shelton’s television fame. Tickets for the Foxborough will go on sale on Friday, March 29, 2019, at the link available here. If their promo video is any indication, Strait and Shelton have a good working relationship, and their show is likely to produce more of that, in addition to great performances anticipated by Johnson and Smith.
