Mariana Walker worked as Alvin Junior High’s choir director for the past 16 years but had to leave for hospice care when her cancer became too much to bare. Many students who loved and respected their choir teacher wanted to express gratitude before she passed on.

A crowd of students gathered outside her home to sing Hillsong United’s “Oceans” only minutes before Walker died. “Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders/Let me walk upon the waters,” the soothing song repeats.

Laura Sammons, Walker’s best friend, told KVUE, “They had this beautiful song to sing for her. We opened the doors and just let the sound float in there.” Their message came not a moment too soon as Walker soon found peace shortly after their tribute was heard.

Principal LeRoy Castro sent out a letter to students and faculty following Walker’s passing. “Our counselors will be available to provide support to students and staff as they cope with this difficult news. Please reach out to them if you need support during this difficult time,” the letter reads.

Hopefully, the junior high staff and students can mourn together through counseling, community, and music.
