On October 18th, Cornerstone Retirement Community was decorated with purple and white balloons and three cakes spelling out 1-0-5 for Helen Powell’s momentous 105th birthday in Texarkana.

On the Cornerstone Healthy Living Community’s Facebook page, Powell is pictured holding her son’s face with a look of absolute love and admiration. Her son, Don Cox, is 82-years-old, but by looks of the sweet captured image, the mother and son bond didn’t fade as they grew old together.

TXK Today quotes Cox reflecting on his mother’s special day, “She is the most beautiful woman, inside and out. We had some pretty tough times, but she never missed a beat. She went to work and took care of me. She’s been the best mother in the whole wide world, and I am so blessed to have her, I really am.”

Powell spent her life in Texarkana, Texas. She was born in the city, graduated from Texarkana High School, survived cancer while living there, and danced with her husband often when they were young. When asked if she has any tips to live a long life, she denies knowing anything secretive. In fact, she loves eating candy, so perhaps the secret to a long life is to enjoy oneself and the journey.
