Texas Centennial Markers: What You Need to Know

Amazingly, a few years ago, one person took it upon herself and, with a grassroots effort of a few volunteers, managed to locate, inspect, and photograph hundreds of the centennial markers despite the fact that there was no accurate inventory of location or even a registered existence of many of them. Not long ago, Sarah Reveley presented her findings to the Texas Historical Commission in Austin which, in turn, dedicated one of its Medallion magazines to the Centennial Celebration.

These markers are a permanent reminder of our Texas history, each and every one recalls a time and place to be honoured and remembered. Information about the 1936 Texas Centennial Marker Restoration Project can be found at www.thcfriends,org.

So, the next time you’re driving down the highway or backroads of Texas, keep an eye out for those tall slabs of granite with a bronze star within a bronze wreath. Stop, take a moment, read its unique story. You’ll be glad you did.
