Many Texans feel they work hard for a living, spend many hours at their jobs, and also spend time on the road commuting. In a recent study by WalletHub (a credit score and financial advice site) the numbers were crunched on workforce participation and total hours spent on and off the job, and a list was then compiled of cities across America that had the hardest-working people. You wouldn’t be surprised to learn that a city in Texas made that list, but you might be surprised to learn which one it was.

WalletHub measured the data from 116 cities, taking into account details from line items such as “Direct Work Factors” including average workweek hours and labor-force participation rate, and quantified “Indirect Work Factors” such as average commute time, workers with multiple jobs, volunteer hours per person, and each state’s average leisure time per person per day. Looking to the US Census Bureau, this data was used to create their subsequent city rankings in combination with information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Corporation for National and Community Service, creating the 2017 Hardest-Working Cities in America list.

The top US city that came out head and shoulders above the rest was Anchorage, Alaska, with a population of 300,000, ranking first in both indirect as well as direct work factors and scoring an overall 90.76 on the scale, which is approximately nine points above second place, which came from the great state of Texas! The city of Plano placed second on this list of hardest working cities in the entire United States, with an overall score of 81.49. This Texas city’s direct work factor scores were just behind Anchorage; however, its indirect work factor scores were significantly lower on the scale, ranking forty-second overall. And who was at the bottom of this list? With an average work week of 33.3 hours and 72 percent of its population between the ages of 16 and 64, the city of Burlington, Vermont ranked at the bottom of the hardest-working cities in America. If you would like to learn more about the study’s findings and methodology, their full listing is provided here, on WalletHub’s website.
