CBS DFW states that last year, “The Family Place provided shelter for 32 men and nonresidential services to 50 men.” Noticing a need to increase outreach for men who leave relationships that are abusive situations, the nonprofit decided to create a new facet of their organization.

When The Family Place helped men and their children in the past, they were given meals and counseling and placed into hotels for shelter instead of a designated, private place. Now, they’re proud to have 21 beds and private rooms dedicated to serving battered men.

Due to societal expectations and stigmas, leaving abusive situations can be very difficult for men who often have no idea where to turn. The Family Place hopes that opening the first Texas shelter for men escaping domestic violence will bring a spotlight to the issue and encourage respect.

By taking this big step forward, the organization is increasing the power of their mission, which reads, “For victims of family violence, The Family Place is the Dallas area’s leading organization delivering proven programs that address emotional and physical abuse and incest. The Family Place provides free, comprehensive services that prevent violence and fully support women, children and men on their path from fear to safety.”
