Texas Football Player with Down Syndrome Scores First Touchdown

By  |

Friday night marked a significant game for Belton High School student Tanner Yearwood. Yearwood has Down syndrome, but that doesn’t stop him from achieving goals many of us will never make in our lifetime, like scoring a touchdown at a football game!

On September 23, the Belton Tigers played Harker Heights, and Yearwood was given an opportunity to make an important play. He succeeded with flying colors. Even though the Belton Tigers lost 34-28, the most memorable moment of the entire game was certainly Yearwood’s accomplishment.

The video below shows Yearwood’s play along with ESPN commentary and a look at a moment between him and his coach. It’s easy to spot Yearwood on the field as he is the smallest player, making it even easier to lift him up in victory after his touchdown.

The community is thrilled to see such positive teamwork among high school students. Facebook commenter Linda Flanders Estep replied to The Belton Journal’s post of the video. She said, “That was a touching moment. We were at the game and live in Belton, this sure made us proud to live here!!”
