Texas Jack went on to guide such personages as the Earl of Dunraven and Russia’s Grand Duke Alexis in what was known as the “Great Buffalo Hunt.” He was an expert horseman and marksman. For his exploits, he was featured in Ned Buntline’s dime novel adventures. In the 1870s, he split his guide services with a foray into show business. However, by 1880, consumption got the best of him. He died in Leadville, Colorado—a mining boomtown—at the young age of 33.

In honor of Texas Jack’s creed and valiant lifestyle, the Fredericksburg store that bears his name offers a comprehensive collection of leather goods (including saddles), fine apparel, spurs, firearms, and other period-related items. It’s the perfect place to find hand-crafted items that are designed in the style of the wild west, the days of Texas Jack, with the authentic panache of that bygone time. Texas Jack Wild West Outfitters is a premium collection of cowboy distinction, and one of the last places around in which you can try on the clothing of that era.

The store features firearms and lifestyle items from the 1870s—some of which are reproductions, and some are actually original! As the Cimarron Firearms company showroom, Texas Jack Wild West Outfitter carries a considerable stock of cowboy firearms that match the accouterments your western heroes would have had on hand in a pinch. Not only that, but they’re known for great scratch-and-dent sales! Plus, the store regularly raffles a piece to benefit local business counterparts, namely the Fredericksburg Animal Shelter.

Even the present-day setting of the store speaks to the time period of the products it so proudly represents. Housed in Fredericksburg’s old livery stable and forge, the building was originally built in 1889. The livery was once a line stop for repairs or fresh horses for stages en route from San Antonio to Llano. Today, it’s decorated with the taxidermy mounts of deer, elk, antelope, and buffalo, much like an 1880s mercantile would be. The owners and staff of this family-friendly emporium of all things wild-west are long time Single Action Shooting Society (SASS) supporters and SASS life members. They’ve supported re-enactment groups like the Bandera Cattle Co., sponsored coordinated events with the Admiral Nimitz War Museum, and fund-raised for such organizations as the Former Texas Rangers Association (raising funds for the Former Texas Rangers Heritage Center). Texas Jack Wild West Outfitter has been instrumental in outfitting not only their great customers but entire groups in authentic period recreations from the frontier days of Texas, as well as movies and TV shows being filmed in the area.
