There’s a select group of people out there that have something akin to a “fear of God” put in them at the sight of lightning and the sound of thunder. In Texas, you’re best to find a place to hunker down in a thunderstorm than stand around waiting to see what might happen, but that wasn’t the case (and thankfully so) where these photographers were concerned. With the National Weather Service continuously keeping statistics on fatal lightning strikes, injuries, and the millions which are spent on insurance claims for property damage, Texas might be considered to have some of the highest numbers in these categories for the entire US. But despite this thought, as well as their deadly nature, lightning storms in Texas can create some of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring views. Here are five pictures that capture their essence perfectly.

With quite a number of lightning strikes in a single storm cell, this photo was taken outside of Flomont and posted in July of 2016. This picture was caught with a single 35-second exposure.

Posted in April of this year, this photograph vividly captures lightning from across the water in Southeast Texas at Kemah. The photographer notes using a built-in feature on their Olympus camera called “Live Composite” for just the right shot.

The photographer that captured this image admitted to being so close to the strike at the time of taking the picture that it “blew out the image a little.” Regardless, the beauty of the capture can be seen in the magnificence of the light as well as the stunning blues and purples of shadow around it. It’s a wonderful Texas lightning storm photo, to say the least.
