How many pennies do you think you could collect in 65 years? This Texas man doesn’t have to guess, he knows exactly how many because he’s been saving every single penny since he was 17 years old.

Now 81 years old, Ira Keys of Slaton, Texas, recently deposited his 500-pound penny stash at Prosperity Bank. His final total? $816.00. That means he had saved 81,600 pennies over 65 years. Why was he saving all those pennies?

Ira told KCBD that he was simply following his father’s advice: “He says, ‘Whatever you do son, save your money.’ Back when I started in ’52, I didn’t have a lot of money so I saved pennies and I just kept saving them.”

Ira hasn’t spent a single penny since he got that fateful advice, though he jokes that on his drive to the bank, he “like to have broke the springs on that little-ole pickup.”

At Prosperity Bank that day, it was definitely an unusual day for the tellers as it took the employees above an hour to count out all 81,600. It was one of the more amazing collections of coins that the bank had seen.

However, that isn’t even all of Ira Keys’ penny stash. He told KCBD that he’s “going to build a room divider and have pennies all in it, the shiny ones.” He’ll continue his father’s lesson and keep his piggy bank full.
