For well over 15 years, people from around the world have been playing the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Though the game app Pokémon Go has gained the most attention in mainstream media in the past year, the trading card game (TCG) has seen an influx in popularity, too.

Click2Houston.com says that a Katy man, Bradley Curcio, has earned a name for himself in the Pokemon TCG world. He’s traveled to “Hawaii, London, Brazil and Australia” to play in major games, and he’ll compete in the 2017 Pokémon World Championships in California from August 18–20 for $25,000.

Though Curcio reached fifth place in a recent world championship, he wasn’t always such a great card player. He says that playing at gaming stores changed his life. “The community’s so inviting, welcoming and helpful to newer players so you know. I didn’t know anything about the game I was playing with, honestly, really bad cards and just getting destroyed frequently and they were willing to help me,” he told Click2Houston.
