Texas Rangers Propose New Stadium Instead of Cheaper Canopy Option
Ranger fans who visit Globe Life Park in Arlington have to endure the Texas sun beating down on them since the stadium doesn’t have a roof. To remedy this, an architecture film, Populous, proposed a canopy to shade the majority of visitors. Unfortunately, it didn’t seem like a perfect option.
The principal architect at Populous, Pat Tangen, told the Star-Telegram that along with taking three years to build, “The canopy would change the entire character of Globe Life Park.” He added that, “The poor people that get absolutely blasted in left field, there is no way I can fix that.”
Overall, it seems like the idea of a adding a roof or canopy would be extremely difficult and make some areas of the stadium less than desirable. Officials decided to move forward with asking voters if they want a new stadium with a retractable roof that could be used for other events as well. But this plan would cost $900 million more than the canopy.
The Dallas News reports that if Arlington residents vote yes on November 8th for the new stadium, “They’ll share half the cost of the $1 billion structure with the Rangers, who would be responsible for any overruns. The proposal will also keep the Rangers in Arlington until Jan. 1, 2054.”
