Those who are looking to get away for the upcoming holiday season and colder months are planning ahead due to predictions of a robust winter. Temperatures are expected to be colder than average, and strong storms are anticipated. In order to help, WalletHub, the personal-finance website, has released its 2019’s Best Winter Holiday Destinations report, and you might want to pull up a chair.

Factoring in such things as convenience and cost, WalletHub’s review of winter holiday destinations for this year has taken a different stance. As opposed to scenic beauty, the website compared close to 70 of the largest American metro areas, sectioned in warm and cold weather categories. Each destination was then analyzed against 37 key metrics. For 2019, expense and the amount of hassle involved in traveling to each destination were considered. Weather forecasts, activities and amenities, and safety were also incorporated into the study.

Of course, no Texas cities made the rankings in the cold weather destination category, however, four metro areas did make the top 10 under the warm weather category. San Antonio ranked at number seven, Houston took sixth place, Dallas placed second, and Austin ( in the Texas Hill Country) ranked number one.

Some points of note in this year’s study of the Best Winter Holiday Destinations are:

  • The average flight to a popular warm winter destination costs $344.26, lasts 4 hours and 57 minutes, and has 0.48 connections
  • Among warm destinations, certain states far outdistanced others in terms of accommodation affordability
  • Also among warm destinations, certain cities blew their counterparts out of the water with respect to the number of restaurants per square root of population
