Texas RenFest Closed Early This Saturday Due to Blown Transformer

Chron.com reports that on Saturday, a transformer blew in Montgomery County and caused a major power outage at the Texas Renaissance Festival around 2 p.m. While they could remain open for a while using backup generators and switching to cash-only systems, as the sun began to set, officials had to make a quick decision. On Facebook, the Texas Renaissance Festival wrote, “At 5:35 p.m. on Saturday, the decision was made to close the park early to ensure the safety of our patrons and employees. The day will wrap with the Royal Fireworks display at 6:00 pm and the park closed shortly after.”

When approximately 40,000 patrons tried to leave the festival grounds at the same time, traffic became a big issue. Not only were thousands of people attempting to move in the same direction, but many traffic lights were out, and there was an accident on 1774. “Why are we unable to leave all cars stuck no movement for 30 minutes,” Debra Brown commented on Facebook. Elizabeth Williams sympathized, replying, “…when leaving it took 2.5 hours in priority parking to get 2 miles from the gate. 1.5 hours before our row was even begun to be let out. It was ridiculous.”

The Texas Renaissance Festival opened back up on Sunday with no issues and honored tickets from both Saturday and Sunday.
