I-20 Texas Symbol Removed Amid Safety Concerns

By  |

Those who commute along I-20 in southwest Dallas are fond of the Texas symbol that has stood for the past decade in its median. Travelers have long since made the sign a popular photo opportunity and families marked it off as a familiar piece of nostalgia along their road trips.

Well, the sign is no more, as NBCDFW reported yesterday that the Texas Department of Transportation removed it on Monday amid safety concerns. TXDOT has identified that the safety issue concerns motorists getting back onto the highway without causing a hazardous situation for oncoming drivers.

Crews will finish removing the sign’s outline today, and the symbol will be transported to the city of Grand Prairie, for storage. Despite several “Keep Off Median” signs, drivers have worn a dirt path between Spur 408 and Mountain Creek Parkway to get to the popular attraction for the perfect picture. Until a permanent home can be found for the installation, Grand Prairie spokesperson Amy Sprinkles has stated that it will likely remain in a city storage unit.
