Texas Teacher Decides Not to Give Out Homework
“Brooke is loving her new teacher already!” Samantha Gallagher posted on her Facebook page last week, along with a photo showing why her child’s new teacher immediately gained her admiration.
Second grade teacher Brandy Young, who works for the Godley Independent School District, has taken a stand against homework. In the note she sent home with all of her students, she wrote, “I am trying something new. Homework will only consist of work that your student did not finish during the school day. There will be no formally assigned homework this year.”
Young went on to explain that while pondering the idea and doing research over the summer, she found that there’s no benefit to giving young students extra work.
CNN reports that expert Stephanie Donaldson-Pressman, who contributed to a study in the American Journal of Family Therapy, agrees. She stated, “The data shows that homework over this level is not only not beneficial to children’s grades or GPA, but there’s really a plethora of evidence that it’s detrimental to their attitude about school, their grades, their self-confidence, their social skills and their quality of life.”
Gallagher’s post has gone viral and Young has received an outpouring of positive attention for her decision. Gallagher is thrilled with the lack of homework and enjoys spending that extra time with her daughter.
