The Texas Tech Ranch Horse Team won both the SHTX Collegiate World Championship and the SHTX Collegiate Reserve Championship at the 2019 Stock Horse of Texas Collegiate World Championships. In addition, theirs will be “one of the three teams representing the Stock Horse of Texas at the inaugural Collegiate Challenge at the Road to the Horse this February,” according to the team’s recent Facebook post.

Stock Horse of Texas (SHTX) is the nation’s oldest versatile stock horse association, designed for riders of various skill levels and experiences to learn, improve, and compete in a friendly and affordable environment. Its clinics center around “creating a ‘broke,’ functional stock horse that is a pleasure to ride.” They promote good horsemanship and learning in an atmosphere that is calm and comfortable, suiting all riders from beginner level through advanced. They are also recognized as first-class horse industry clinicians, having garnered title in multiple world championships, teaching regularly with a value for horse and rider that’s unparalleled.

Their shows offer four basic stock horse competitions in the following disciplines: Stock Horse Trail, Reining, Working Cow Horse, and Stock Horse Pleasure. Divisions in each category include: Open, Non Pro, Limited Non Pro, Intermediate Non Pro, Novice, as well as Youth and Junior horse. These allow for riders to show with their counterparts of similar experience and skill level. They also feature incentives for collegiate members and teams. Their collegiate program was initiated in 2005 by the late Dr. Kris Wilson. Wilson’s concept of a competitive collegiate venue has since grown into a program that features over a dozen schools.

The Texas Tech Ranch Horse Team consists of teammates with a passion for riding horses. They practice consistently, which has resulted in a number of wins to their name. In a 2015 interview, Team Coach Chance O’Neal told dailytoreador.com, “We work on their reigning, we work on their trail, we work on their pleasure and we work on their cow work, because those are the four events that we have to compete in. Each student has to compete in all four events on their same horse, and so not only do the students need to be divers, but the horses have to be diverse as well.”
