Texas Teen Dies After Backflipping into San Marcos River
Last week, a 19-year-old died from doing a backflip into the water of the San Marcos River.
Michael Hughes, a young man from New Braunfels, was enjoying himself at Stokes Park near the millrace dam around 5:00 p.m. when he decided to flip into the water. He had been diving and flipping throughout the evening.
Then everyone’s worst fear when jumping into the water came true; he hit his head under the water and failed to resurface.
According to a press release via MySA, “Park Rangers were the first on scene and were able to pull Hughes out of the water and begin CPR.”
Hughes was transported to a hospital, but tragically, it was already too late. He passed away shortly after reaching the local hospital. The official cause of death will not be stated until after the release of the autopsy report.
It’s heartbreaking when someone so young passes away while having innocent, summer fun. When you see so many people jumping into the water and feeling carefree, it’s hard to remember that these accidents can easily occur to anyone leaping into the wild waters of Texas.
