Texas Teen Called ‘Fat Whale’ Turns Table on Bullies, Raises Money for Good Cause
When Dannie McMillan, known to her friends as Dee, found herself at the center of a vicious bullying circle in her high school, she decided to change the conversation.
A junior at Lampasas High School in Lampasas, Texas, Dee is turning her terrible experience with bullies into a positive campaign to make a difference. KCEN reported that Dee was in “study hall when she was texted a screenshot of a Twitter page another student made that called her a ‘fat whale’ and had an image of a whale superimposed over her face.”
Instead of succumbing to the humiliation she felt, she decided to turn her emotional response into a Booster campaign selling custom-T shirts that say “Dee the Fat Whale Saves the Whales” with a picture of a whale on them. The proceeds go directly to the Save the Whales organization in California.
As of now, she has surpassed her 50 shirt goal by a landslide and has raised over $2,500 for the Save the Whales foundation. Additionally, she started a GoFundMe campaign for donations that will also go to the California nonprofit. Her father told KCEN that he “just wants her to be happy and successful in what she does and be proud of what she does.”
The Twitter has since been removed, and it appears that with all of the national publicity her stand against cyberbullying earned, Dee has gotten the last word.
