It’s no Autobahn, but the Texas toll road State Highway 130 is famous for having the highest speed limit in the United States. However, the 85-mph speed limit hasn’t been enough to keep the owners in business.

After lower than expected traffic on the highway, the SH 130 Concession Company is filing for bankruptcy. The company was a partnership between Cintra and Zachry American Infrastructure. SH 130 Concession Company runs the southern 41-mile stretch of the highway while the state department owns the rest.

The 41 miles that SH 130 Concession Company owns (running from north of Mustang Ridge to Seguin) opened a mere 3 years ago, but the company has been plagued with financial issues since year one. They finally had to file Chapter 11 bankruptcy last week when their debt became insurmountable.

“The filing will have no financial impact on the state of Texas,” claims SH 130 Concession Company CEO Alfonso Orol in a statement. “It’s business as usual for our customers, employees, vendors, and surrounding communities during these proceedings.”

Oral still has hope for the highway, though, saying, “We believe that this trend will continue and that the road will become an increasingly popular alternative to I-35 and a valuable asset for the Central Texas region in the years to come as connectivity improves and the area’s economy and population continues to grow.”

This portion of SH 130 will still operate normally while the company goes through bankruptcy proceedings.
