If you’ve ever been to Calvert, Texas, chances are you know about the “crazy kolache lady” who ran Zamykal Gourmet Kolaches.

The owner, Jody Powers, sadly passed away on March 1, 2015 from plasma cell Leukemia, but her memory still lives on. Many people have posted fond memories of Jody on the Zamykal Gourmet Kolaches Facebook page.

Why was Jody such an enigmatic and well-known woman and local business owner? As the video shows, when the shop first opened, people would just pass it by. She says that she went outside and started waving people down and it turned into a dance and song when she got bored. Because of this, she became known as the “crazy collate lady”.

Her passion and love for what she did was apparent. The kolache recipe was her grandmother’s and Jody uses all “old world” ingredients — no shortcuts. The kitchen was ran by her, and only her. She did it all! She baked all night long, preparing 27 different flavors of kolaches by scratch.

Take a look at the “Crazy Kolache Lady” video for a look back at her spunky and infectious spirit, and of course, her love for gourmet kolaches.
