Beyond Stunning: Thousands Walk on Water at ‘The Floating Piers’
From June 18 to July 3, 2016, an unbelievably beautiful art installation floated in Lake Iseo in Italy. The $17 million project was dreamt up by artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude. You may remember their famous installation in Central Park called “The Gates.” Jeanne-Claude has since passed away, but Christo made sure another one of their visions came to life. The new stunning piece is called “The Floating Piers.”

Approximately 220,000 high-density blocks of polyethylene rested upon the lake, and they were steady enough to hold the weight of a crowd eager to walk over the water in the picturesque area. The piers were covered in 100,000 square meters of fabric that can appear different shades of orange-y gold throughout the day. The walk was about two miles long.
The project isn’t political or meant to have a definite, clear message. Little Things quoted Christo as saying, “Our project is all about joy and beauty. Absolutely, totally useless, unnecessary…It is not propaganda, it is not messages, not anything. See it, feel it, move it, have all the senses.”
By searching through the #thefloatingpiers hashtag, it’s evident that people embraced all of their senses at the installation. Unfortunately, “The Floating Piers” is only a temporary piece, but there’s a live feed of the bridge showing the area and deconstruction. If you squint really hard, you can still pretend you’re there.
