If you’ve followed George Strait throughout his life and career in country music, no doubt, you’re aware that the tiny Texas town where he was born is known as Poteet. Located in Atascosa County, its claim to fame is producing the absolute King of Country Music. Does it get any better than that?
Strait was born on May 18, 1952. It’s our guess that Poteet would never be the same after it was discovered that this Texas star was skyrocketing to fame on the country music charts. But then, perhaps they weren’t aware of their celebrity status.

In 1981, Strait had his first hit single with the song “Unwound.” Throughout the 1980s, moving right on up through into recent years, he continued to produce number ones on the country charts. He has since been named Artist of the Decade by the Academy of Country Music, has been nominated into the Country Music Hall of Fame, and has won countless awards, including a number of Entertainer of the Year trophies. He’s also known for a phenomenal touring career… but, we digress.
