The hike to the tracks is about six miles round trip, with trail markers about every half a mile letting you know much farther to the tracks. It’s rated as a moderate to challenging hike. The trail is rather rocky, so wear good shoes. The trail is lined with Ashe juniper and bright yellow wild flowers this time of year, with the occasional live oak tree hanging over the trail, providing plenty of shade. There is abundant wild life to be seen.

If you’re a bird watcher and on the lookout for the rare golden cheeked warbler, a wood pecker, or a roadrunner, you won’t be disappointed. This time of year is perfect to see Monarch butterflies on their yearly migration to Mexico.  The park is far enough away from San Antonio that you can’t hear any of the traffic that you do at some of the other local hiking areas. You only hear the occasional fly over of a plane and sometimes a friendly park ranger driving by on an ATV, but other than that, it’s just you and nature.

If you are interested in more than just dinosaur tracks, there is plenty for you to do at Government Canyon State Natural Area. They have walk-in tent camping sites and group camping sites as well as a pavilion and enclosed gallery to rent. There are many exhibits to learn the history of the area, a visitor center and a state park store. Some of the other points of interest include the Zizelmann House, which was believed to have been built in 1882 by a family of German bakers, and the Wildcat Canyon Ranch Buildings, where you can still see the old corral, stock tank, and windmill. With its diverse vegetation, abundant wildlife, dinosaur tracks, and 40 miles of trails, Government Canyon State Natural Area is truly a Texas Hill Country treasure for all to enjoy.
