U.S. Coast Guard Ends Search for Missing Texas Woman in Gulf of Mexico
Samantha Broberg fell off the 10th deck of Carnival cruise ship en route to Cozumel, Mexico. After an exhaustive search, the U.S. Coast Guard is suspending their efforts.
The Carnival Liberty was en route to Cozumel for a short four-day cruise when 10 hours after leaving the dock, 33-year-old Samantha Broberg of Arlington fell off the ship. She was reported missing on Friday afternoon, and the crew was able to determine she was the woman in the surveillance footage. A ship-wide search began, when a crew member pulled up the video footage from the night before, as the Daily Mail reported.
About 200 miles from Galveston, where the ship sailed from, security footage captured a woman tumbling overboard around 2 a.m. on Friday morning. The footage showed that the woman climbed onto the deck railing, sat down, and almost immediately fell backwards.
Later on Friday, the ship returned to Galveston, and the U.S. Coast Guard painstakingly covered the area where she was last seen, all 4,300 square miles of ocean. For over 20 hours, crews searched extensively and did not come across any clues as to her disappearance.
On Monday, May 16, the U.S. Coast Guard called off its search for Broberg in the Gulf of Mexico after their exhaustive search efforts.
