Unless you’re familiar with the story, the area will look like a bunch of rocks, a few small structures, and electrical outlets in odd places. But the Men’s Bible Class in Junction, Texas, wants to tell this Christian story, and does so every year, without fail, since 1948 at the Easter Pageant at Lover’s Leap Amphitheater. Best to get there early, this spot off FM 2169 below Lover’s Leap fills up quickly every Easter Eve. The pageant begins at sundown on April 20, 2019, and no admission fee is charged. Seating is up to you: lawn chairs, tailgates, and bag chairs work just fine. Bring a blanket too, just in case!

Junction’s Men’s Bible Class began after World War II, when it was realized, by observation, that returning veterans needed an organization where they could fit in. Local resident Coke Stevenson invited the men to get together for a bible study outside of the formalities of a “church” setting. This outdoor gathering spot came to be home of the Easter Pageant, the perfect place to reenact the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Coke Stevenson also had an extended legacy. From 1941-1947, he served as Governor of Texas.

Performed by local volunteers, the dramatic reenactment benefits from great costumes, lighting, and the beautiful natural landscape. Weather cannot stop the pageant: it has never been canceled, despite sleet, snow, record rainfall, and heat. The show went on! The Easter Pageant starts with a traditional Bible lesson. As the sun sets, deep orange and red color the limestone bluff below the huge American flag, and the curtain is raised at dark. The three-hour long performance features silence from the actors while readers and sound effects are broadcast through the Amphitheater’s PA system. This story is told with compassion, history, and loyalty. Make a trip out of it and enjoy this unique experience.
