Following a commissioning ceremony which took place on Saturday, June 10 in Galveston, Texas, a new warship which was named after the former Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who had been wounded in a deadly 2011 shooting, has now been put into active service.

Giffords addressed the crowd during Saturday’s ceremony, stating that she was honored that the ship would carry her name, and that the vessel is “strong and tough, just like her crew.”

A number of speakers, at the event identified that Giffords’ courage and fortitude made her the worthy candidate for such an honor, and being the ship’s namesake shows the perseverance and determination that are the very backbone of the U.S. Navy.

Not only that, but Giffords’ husband, former U.S. astronaut Mark Kelly, was also a Navy man, and so the honor has not been taken lightly within their family. Following its commissioning ceremony, the USS Gabrielle Giffords will be based in San Diego, California.
