One of the more perfect spots to enjoy nature and get away for a while is in Vanderpool, here in the Texas Hill Country. Glorious views, great rock climbing opportunities, crystal clear lakes to play in, swim, fish, or just float on, surrounded by rolling hills, fields of flowers, and enormous oak trees, it also serves as the southern access point to Lost Maples State Natural Area.

This little Texas town on the Sabinal River is home to a population of less than 100 and was named for the very first postmaster, L.B. Vanderpool. It can be reached through one of the top ten scenic drives in Texas and is home to some of the more stunning and secluded valleys to be found in the Texas Hill Country. Visitors to the area enjoy camping, backpacking, picnicking, photography, bird-watching, and the study of nature, while area waterways provide ample opportunity for great fishing, and of course swimming.

Lost Maples Winery is in close proximity to Vanderpool, and tours are available year-round. The Lone Star Motorcycle Museum is also located in Vanderpool, home to 50 classic motorcycles, some dating back to 1910. Check out their website for hours of operation and plan a tour. Another great pastime in the area is bird watching. Due to the fact that the beautiful Lost Maples State Park is home to short-tailed, long-billed Green Kingfishers, birders are keen to visit and see the other types of species that can be viewed and cataloged. Guides are also available to provide birding tours on private ranches and properties. All this and much more await in the tiny town of Vanderpool, right here in the Texas Hill Country!
