Texas Veteran Gets a New House from The Home Depot

By  |

John Fruge, who served in the military in Vietnam, ran a washateria in Colmesneil, Texas with his son Eli nine miles outside of Woodville. All went well until hurricane Rita ripped the roof off of the washateria. They weren’t able to pull together the money to fix it, and they ended up living in the broken building. Little did they suspect what the citizens of Colmesneil and Home Depot had in store for them.

Colmesneil residents and Mayor Donald Baird decided that it was unacceptable that a war veteran was living this way in their community and they were determined to find a way to help. They reached out to Home Depot who gives grants to help out veterans.

KTRE reports that Jack Parker, Home Depot store manager, said,  “The city came to us and gave us the project, we realized it was something that we could really make an impact on and change somebody’s life…The Home Depot has committed a hundred million dollars over the last five years to basically provide a safe place for any veteran to live that wanted it.”

After burning down the old building and removing its deconstructed remains, Home Depot employees volunteered to erect a new home in its place. After five months, the new structure looks welcoming and beautiful. Surprisingly, Mayor Donald Baird even dropped by to mow the lawn!

John Fruge will receive the keys soon.
