Bull Shark Attacks Vacationing Waco Dentist
While vacationing in the Bahamas this weekend, Waco dentist Dr. Steven T. Cutbirth was attacked by a bull shark!
The dentist, his son-in-law, a guide with 30 years of experience, and the guide’s nephew were enjoying the day by free diving and spearing hogfish. Normally, the group would not have held multiple fish speared at one time because it welcomes sharks. But Dr. Cutbirth was unaware that another member of his party already had a catch, so he caught one of his own.
When a nearby shark noticed all of the potential food waving in the water, it came over and hunted for the fish. After it failed to locate the first hogfish, it went after Dr. Cutbirth’s catch and ended up attacking him as well.
In a Facebook post Dr. Cutbirth wrote yesterday, he says, “As I neared the surface, all of a sudden it was as if a football linebacker had crashed into the right side of my head. I was stunned and could not imagine what had hit me. I looked to my right and there was the white bottom side of the shark’s mouth along with a wide open mouth and plenty of teeth. I released the spear and fish and instinctively struck out with the back of my right arm and hand, still holding the spear handle, striking the shark square in the right side of its head.”
Once he reached the safety of the boat, he realized the shark had bitten him. The group rushed him to medical assistance where he helped a nurse stitch him up (since no doctor was on duty).
The images he posted are disturbing, but if you can’t help but feel curious, click here to see them.
