At a Walmart in San Antonio on Bandera Road on Saturday afternoon, an off-duty deputy just so happened to be in the right place at the right time to potentially safe a life.

KSAT reports that a plain clothes Walmart Loss Prevention employee was walking behind a person planning to shoplift from the store. When they confronted the man about to walk out of the storefront, they turned around and stabbed the employee in the stomach.

Thankfully, a deputy was nearby and responded to the scene. He was able to fashion a tourniquet for the victim which other first responders say could have saved the employee’s life especially since the stab wound was near a major artery. SAPD Sgt. James Lint confirms with MySA.com, “With him being here (at the Walmart) he was able to get a tourniquet on him. That’s probably what saved his life.”

The victim was rushed to the hospital, while the suspect ran away. According to reports, police haven’t been able to track down the suspect since the male in his 30s or 40s matches the description of many panhandlers in the area. KSAT says he was ” last seen wearing a red shirt and shorts and has a limp.”
