Watch Austin’s Own Asleep at The Wheel Perform ‘Route 66’
For a while now, we’ve all enjoyed Ray Benson and nine-time Grammy Award winners Asleep at The Wheel perform their patented Texas swing. The group still excites with their unique blend of Jazz and Country at such an enjoyable level, that they might go on to win their tenth trophy in February’s annual celebration of top artists.
The legendary group has come a long way since forming in 1970, when Van Morrison mentioned them to a hot new magazine called Rolling Stone. The band made its way to Austin in 1973, when Willie Nelson suggested they ought to move to the Texas Hill Country.
Asleep at The Wheel has been here ever since.
Even well into the 2000’s, Benson’s voice has not lost its flavor or its audience, as his national profile has only grown larger. The singer keeps himself busy with the Texas Music Scene TV Show and continuing to tour and record with the band.
