A man from Houston is being considered a hero after saving a dog from near strangulation. The dog’s owner entered an elevator, however the pup somehow got left behind. As the elevator rose, Johnny Mathis managed to remove the leash in time, saving the dog’s life.

The incident occurred in an apartment building where Mathis resides. He took to Twitter following his emotionally intense experience, which was also caught on the security camera. He shared the video along with these moving comments: “Y’all I’m shaking!!! I just saved a dog on a leash that didn’t make it onto the elevator with the owner before the door closed! I just happened to turn around as the door closed and it started to lift off the ground I got the leash off in time.” His tweet has received a lot of attention, and the video is quite nerve wracking despite knowing the positive end result.

The video shows Mathis, having just exited the elevator at his floor, then scrambling to ensure the dog (a Pomeranian) gets freed from its collar as its leash begins to rise to the top of the elevator’s door frame. Thankfully, he did so in the nick of time. He later told local press that the owner, a new tenant of the building, wasn’t aware of just how quickly the elevator doors would close. She caught the attention of Mathis when she began screaming the moment the doors closed and she realized the predicament. At that time, someone in the elevator with her was going up to the building’s sixth floor, and she wasn’t able to do anything about the dog or the leash from inside. Since sharing the video on Twitter, it has garnered more than 156K likes and more than 36K comments and has been viewed 20 million times. Thanks to the quick thinking and actions of Mathis, the Pomeranian is safely back with its owner, and we’re hopeful no such similar incidents will happen in the future.
