Watch Willie Nelson Sing the Ever-Relatable “Always on My Mind”
Back in 1982, Columbia released Willie Nelson’s classic smash hit, “Always on My Mind,” and it never, ever gets old.
The song was the feature track on an album by the same name, which spent 253 weeks aboard the Billboard Top Country Albums chart. And, while it is Willie’s Grammy Award-winning version of the song we remember most, he is actually far from the first to have recorded it — Elvis did it back in ’72 after separating from wife Priscilla, and before that even, soul singer Gwen McCrae had a studio version.
But nobody does it like Texas’ own Red Headed Stranger.
Not only is the theme of sorrowful separation one that is universal, but the song has the effect of meaning many different things to different people.
The writer of the song, Wayne Carson, recounted as much in a book by Nashville journalist Jake Brown: “In this case, ‘Always On My Mind’ happens to be one of those things that, universally, everybody on the planet has been there, you know. And it struck all at one time. Everybody touched base with that one. It was just magic that it was so simple and so right on the button.”
