The town of Wimberley started out as a trading post close to Cypress Creek in 1848. In 1874, after the local grist mill had changed hands and names an equal number of times, the mill was finally sold to Pleasant Wimberley. In 1880, a San Marcos postmaster applied to have a post office established at the settlement and submitted the name Wimberleyville on the application. It was subsequently shortened to Wimberley, and the name stuck as the settlement itself became a town. Aside from these humble beginnings, the area itself is super amiable and many a tourist likes to frequent it, but if you’re from out of town, or you’re simply new to the Texas Hill Country and unsure as to what to keep an eye out for, here are some other great Wimberley details.

Wimberley Particulars That Attract the Tourists in Droves to the Texas Hill Country
Jacobs Well

The awe-inspiring view that awaits you at Jacob’s Well is near indescribable – but we’ll give it a shot! It’s approximately a 120-foot deep spring with an opening roughly 12 feet in diameter, both amazing and almost frightening if it weren’t so appealing to jump in. At one point (near 1924) the spring-fed swimming hole had a surge so strong its water discharged almost six feet into the air. Over time, however, the aquifer that supplies it has been depleted somewhat due to development, and twice (once in 2000 and again in 2008) it ceased to flow, causing the county to enact water conservation and management measures.

The creek near which the original settlement for Wimberley was established, this water system has a blue-green hue to it and is surrounded by lush plant life. Available for paddling sports and swimming, it’s reminiscent of a tropical paradise in spring and summer and in the autumn, its surrounding foliage changes colors, becoming an equally mesmerizing site.
Wimberley’s Night Skies

Situated just far enough in the countryside whereas city light pollution doesn’t deter a stargazer’s ability to look up at the “…stars at night…,” the Wimberley night skies are a spectacular thing to gaze upon. Night photography works quite well here and stargazing as a hobby, or a regular practice and passion is truly magical.
