People are Flocking to This ‘Terrible’ Artist for Purposefully Bad Tattoos
Helena Fernandes doesn’t claim to be a “good” artist, but she’s certainly prolific and dedicated to her work. Bored Panda writes that this 26-year-old woman living in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil has her own home tattoo studio where she specializes in one-of-a-kind designs that only her hand can conjure up. The drawings are crude, but endearing, and people are flocking to her door to get their own original piece of artwork permanently inscribed on their bodies.
In Portuguese, she refers to her tattoos as “tatuagens peba” AKA “trash tattoos.” The point of her work isn’t to impress with hyper-realistic portrayals of animals or landscapes, instead, she simply uses black ink and a thin needle to draw sketches that look like little doodles someone might come up with on a school notebook.
Fernandes has an Instagram account with over 15.7k followers who love to see her tattoos and drawings that haven’t made it onto skin just yet. People who admire her work see it for its uniqueness. As Carole Anderson Facebook review, “Depends on one’s definition of drawing. Her lines are clean & sure. The drawings are quirky & unique in the domain of tattoo but many illustrators & comic artists have great success with this kind of work. Cudos to the artist. She found a wonderful niche for a lucrative, fun & creative occupation.”
