Skimming Devices Found in Texas Gas Stations Can Steal Your Payment Info
We all have to be vigilant nowadays about keeping our credit and debit card information private. ABC 13 in Houston reports that credit card skimming devices have been seen in the Pasadena area at gas stations. These pieces of technology look exactly like regular card readers, and criminals place them over existing card readers at gas pumps and ATMs.
Skimming devices are often only held on by tape. In addition to this violation, police also found several tiny cameras attached in strategic spots to read one’s PIN number.
There are a few things gas station and ATM customers can do to avoid becoming part of this tricky scam. ABC 13 recommends vigilantly checking your bank account for unknown charges. Also, go ahead and give the card reader a little tug. If it’s loose, that’s not a good sign, and if it’s only held on by tape, you might heroically tear the device off.
After deeming the card reader safe, use your non-dominate hand to block any possible cameras from getting your PIN information. The news station also notes that even though it takes more time and effort, going inside to pay is a sure way to not be affected by the scam.
