Visitors to Comfort can get there via Kerrville, Bandera and Boerne, bypassing second-to-none scenery. Your first stop might be at an antique shop. The Comfort Antique Mall can’t be missed, but a quick glance on Google will have you hunting down the next big deal at places like Blackbird Antiques and Cypress Creek Antiques.

One final bit of history rooted in Comfort is the Treue Der Union Monument. Dedicated on August 10, 1866 to commemorate those who died at the 1862 Nueces Massacre, the German-named monument (meaning “loyalty to the union”) is the marker for the final resting place of the majority 34 killed in this Civil War confrontation. It’s only the sixth mass-grave burial site to fly the American flag at half-staff in perpetuity, is the only monument to the Union on formerly Confederate soil, and was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1968. Sure to be a moving visit should you make the trek, the monument holds true to its roots, just like the town of Comfort.
