An amazing display of 1,400 artistically decorated toilet seat lids awaits visitors to The Colony’s soon-to-open Truck Yard. The outsider art collection of 98-year-old Barney Smith drew visitors to his San Antonio museum for 25 years. The museum was purchased by Jason Boso for his third Truck Yard which opened in North Texas in 2017.

Both Boso and octogenarian artist Smith are true Texas legends. While they are from different generations and different career paths, both are creative artists in their fields.

Barney Smith started decorating toilet seat lids 40 years ago, and he opened his museum over 25 years ago. Some of his more innovative lids include pieces from the Berlin Wall and the Challenger space shuttle.

There is also a seat signed by San Antonio Spurs NBA Coach Gregg Popovich. Smith has been featured in The Guinness Book of Records, in books, and in local and national periodicals as well as on TV.

Boso’s Brain Storm Shelter purchased Smith’s funky collection with hopes of turning it into a top 20 roadside attraction in America. “Barney Smith’s Toilet Seat Art Museum is not a temporary installation,” Boso says. “It is a permanent addition to The Colony Truck Yard that will double as a private event space.”

Art Institute of Dallas graduate Jason Boso’s creative concepts include Twisted Root Burger Company, Tacos & Avocados, By the Horns Brewing, and Truck Yard. The Truck Yard backyard restaurant’s first location in Dallas’ trendy Lower Greenville area proved so popular Boso is opening two more this summer. Along with The Colony, a Truck Yard will open in Houston’s EaDo neighborhood.
