Stocking up on provisions is a must when camping, so a stop at Bad Bob’s Bend Store is a no-brainer. Bob has been a fixture of the Bend area Hill Country since 1993 but a musical sensation since his band days in the 1980s. And his “badness” refers to his guitar playing, not that he’s a mean dude. His country store offers more than just the necessary staples for a successful camping adventure, but a good dose of country hospitality, too. Pick up some bait and brew fishing expedition, grab a homemade burger before heading out to the wilderness, or stick around a while for some boot scootin’ to some local live country tunes. So whether you stop pre-camp to stock up on supplies, or post camp on your way back to civilization, don’t miss Bad Bob’s.

No article on the Texas Hill Country is complete without mentioning a local winery. Five miles east of Bend is Fiesta Winery, where not just wine, but family is taken seriously. The Baxter Ranch has been at the heart of the family for six generations. In 2010, the family decided to take the ranch in a different direction and planted three acres of Mourvedre, Tempranillo, and Cabernet Sauvignon varietals. Other varietals were added later allowing them to expand their wine offerings.

Wine selections are available to please any palate from their sweet whites like Texas Hill Country Sweet White a blend of Blanc du Bois, Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay and reds like Back Porch Sittin’ a Cabernet with blackberry fruit, aged in oak. Drier selections like Fiesta Winery Cabernet Sauvignon, a full-bodied red with hints of tobacco and Fiesta Winery Malbec another red selection with aromas of cherry and hints of toast for those who prefer less sweet wines.
