Meet Beryl, the orphaned bovine who thinks she’s a dog. Seriously. The story goes that this beautiful Brahman from Australia was raised with two puppies after her mother sadly passed away from complications at birth. Ranch owner Sally Webster chose to raise the calf with her dogs, and as a result, it’s common to find Beryl mirroring their behavior right down to wanting to curl up on the carpet in the house, waiting for a pet.

So convinced is she of being a dog, she sits patiently awaiting snuggles from her owners, who happily accommodate! Webster cared for and bottle-fed Beryl when she was a little wee, even wrapping her up in blankets until she was able to sleep outdoors – which might be why she considered the house part of her territory.

In a 2016 interview with The Dodo, Webster explained, “She just likes to try and get in when she sees an open door.” And when it comes to feeling at home: “She has an amazing memory and is very smart, so she knows where the calf milk lives in the laundry. The day she was caught in the lounge took me by surprise. I really didn’t expect to see her making herself comfortable sitting on the carpet,” said Webster.

Since her original interview, Webster has shared Beryl’s upbringing with fans around the world through social media, including all her quirks and charms, and now videos of her “mini moos”, as she refers to Beryl’s offspring. Luckily, she has always been a well-behaved beauty, and although she acts like a dog, we’re sure her babies will benefit from being raised up right by such caring and patient owners!
