Boerne has a new hidden gem which is sure to be a delight for kids and enliven the inner child in you! The Turnpike Toy Museum is located in a strip center toward the end of town. Previously a purely digital collection, the toys which date from the 1950s to the present day are now out for viewing. Specializing in “Matchbox Size” or small scale cars that are 1/64th scale, this amazing collection contains over 21,000 vehicles, shown in rotating displays. This ensures each visit brings something new to your imagination or memory! Additionally, if advance notice is provided, a request for specific displays may be granted.

Located at 1020 N. Main St. and opened on February 8, 2020, a myriad of other toys are also on display at the museum, including planes, model trains, boats, motorcycles, military, fire engines, police cars, Batmobiles, plush toys, Star Wars items, and Smurf collections. Fun activities for kids include a Minifig Hide & Seek game; let your LEGO heart go wild!

The diecast small scale cars are all from the private collection of a single owner: Steven Leary. Inspiration to share his collection with the world came when visiting Albuquerque’s Tinker Town Museum with his wife Cheryl, then again at the World’s Largest Toy Museum in Branson, Missouri. One display at The Turnpike Toy Museum is a parking lot of 400 cars, which Steven says is his favorite. Cheryl likes the Volkswagen collection best.

After a temporary closure due to COVID-19 social distancing measures, the storefront museum is planning to reopen at the beginning of May, 2020. An online catalog has also been organized, so cars may be viewed virtually. Typical admission prices are $7 for adults, $5 for children 6-12, and children under 5 are free. Discounted admission is available for first responders, active-duty military, and veterans. The gift shop has vintage and new toys, and it will soon feature gifts. Be sure to bookmark this Boerne site for holidays and birthdays!
