Start your afternoon with a Swiss Mushroom Burger ($8.75, with tax and a tip. We’re rounding it up to $10) at Hondo’s on Main Gospel Sunday. This is toe-tapping, sing-along-sway-along music, and you are going to need the energy from the burger to make it through this full afternoon.
Gillespie County Fair Horse Races

The Gillespie County Fair Association is the Oldest Continuous County Fair in Texas! The horse races are only in-season, but if you’ve never been to a horse race, it is an experience. The admission charge is only $8 per person, but if you want to bet on the races you will need a $3 program and some cash for bets. Fredericksburg Insider isn’t much of a betting man, but he likes to get a beer at the Bier Garten and go right up to the fence to watch the horses run by. They run both quarter horse and thoroughbred races and Post Time is 1 p.m.
Lady Bird Park Swimming Pool

The Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Pool is just a stone’s throw from the Fairgrounds, and you are going to be hot and sweaty after the races. Go to the pool for a $2.00 entry fee and chill out for a while. If you’re staying in town you might want to go take a nap afterward, but you will have refreshed your adventuresome spirit after a dip in these cool waters.
