Bandera has a great new eatery which showcases an American classic: the fresh egg. Open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., The Hen’s Nest takes eggs in new directions via a revolving menu which changes every week. Becoming a regular doesn’t mean the same order each time! Opened in January 2019 by Sheli Hinton, who cooks and operates the restaurant in addition to working full time in dentistry, the Hen’s Nest is located at 1110 Cedar Street, inside Cedar Street Market. All eggs come from the 41 hens at her home, who are kept as pets after their egg-laying days are done.

Although the Hen’s Nest menu is never the same from one week to the next, here are some examples of the tasty vittles of previous weeks. For main courses, Bacon Cheeseburger Hash with a fried egg, Quinoa with Sautéed Spinach, tomatoes, avocado, feta, and fried egg, and a Cheddar Waffle Sandwich with syrup, cheddar, bacon, avocado, and egg were offered. Sides of the past have included Creole Grits, Cheddar Pea Salad, and Scottish Eggs, which are boiled eggs wrapped in seasoned pork sausage, then baked. Of course, you can always get a classic breakfast by ordering The Gary Special of two eggs, with two pieces of bacon, two pieces of sausage, and toast.

If more motivation is needed, complimentary mimosas are served with meals for those over 21 years of age, as well as sodas, water, coffee, espresso, cappuccino, and iced tea. Three of Sheli’s four sons are Marines, and The Hen’s Nest is big on community! Free meals are provided for first responders in uniform. Also, during every first weekend of the month, women with mammogram receipts receive a free meal. Do some shopping at Cedar Street Market with a full belly and bask in delicious support of small Texas businesses!
