One of the most scenic driving routes found in the Texas Hill Country goes through Willow City. All that nature has to offer, including creeks that look like they popped out of a painting, rolling hills, and lush meadows overflowing with local flora, can be found at this hidden city in the Lone Star State.
In addition, the local wildlife you’ll see on your drive add to the charm of the surroundings. Inevitably, you’ll see grazing cattle and horses that give off a sleek luster in the sunlight. Road trips through this part of the Hill Country are never disappointing, especially when there’s nothing but wide-open spaces around you and gorgeous landscape filling it. Willow City is so much more than a destination at the end of a journey; it’s the trip you’ve longed for, that gets you out into the fresh country air, filled with the sights, scents, and sounds you can appreciate if you turn your radio down.

Willow City is an unincorporated town roughly 25 minutes from Enchanted Rock State Natural Area. It was settled prior to the Civil War. In 2005, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It’s famed for the “Willow City Loop,” especially during bluebonnet season. Road trippers and visitors enjoy the area all other seasons throughout the year as well, with great camping, picnic spots, excellent hiking, and bird watching opportunities. You can also go antiquing and enjoy an area wine tour. There’s fantastic local barbecue to be enjoyed as well, not to mention a live music and horseshoes hot spot!

Willow City is also quite close to Fredericksburg (a Hill Country hub of activity and tours, as well as wonderfully unique accommodations). With plenty to see and do, it’s a Texas road trip you need to plan, brimming with the type of scenery you generally only dream of witnessing in real life. Bring your camera, load up the kids (or don’t), and bring your appetite for amazing views and wildlife galore!
