Holocaust Museum Houston to More Than Double Its Size in Major Expansion
By early 2019, the Holocaust Museum Houston will become the forth-largest Holocaust museum in the United States thanks to a $49.4 million expansion. The HMH website says that the rebuilding project will bring the site to an incredible 57,000 square feet to suit the growing number of students and adults who visit the museum. Each visitor is encouraged to honor the survivors of the Holocaust and recognize the historical and current relevance of the Holocaust.
According to Click2Houston, “Two-thirds of the current building will be razed to make way for a three-story structure to house exhibits, classrooms, library and administrative offices.” HMH adds that the new first floor of the museum will contain the permanent collection of “personalized testimony and artifacts donated by Houston-area Holocaust Survivors,” an Anne Frank section, and a Human Rights Gallery. The second floor will hold art, like the paintings of Samuel Bak’s, and butterflies that represent the children who died during the Holocaust. A research and educational center along with a 200-seat auditorium will also reside on the second floor, and a library with over 10,000 items will top the building on the third floor.
Construction begins this October. The permanent collection will relocate about six miles away at 9220 Kirby Drive while the new building is constructed.
