Horny Toad Brewing Company, in Rowena, Texas, features eight beers on tap. Known for their most popular batch, Angelo Amber Ale, they also offer small batches of craft beer, which are only available on site. However, their product is so unique and picking up steam, there are also batches served at a number of Concho Valley restaurants and bars.

Horny Toad brewery can be found at 313 Edward St. in Rowena, famed as being the hometown of the infamous Bonnie Parker, one half of the notorious Bonnie and Clyde crime couple. It’s located in what once was a service station. Ironically, it’s situated “directly across the street from a memorial to prohibition.” Word has it that Rowena townspeople buried one bottle each of beer and whiskey beneath the marker when the county voted themselves dry. The marker reads: “Here Lies Our Liberty, April 28, 1911.”

Today, Horny Toad Brewing Company has made its mark on Runnels County, in addition to other parts of the state of Texas, where its become known for brewing quality craft beer. Using a brewing system that incorporates a seven-barrel technique (comprised mainly of re-purposed dairy equipment). there is zero automation to the process with which they produce their handcrafted ales. Using only malted barley, hops, yeast, and water, they’re known within the region for doing what they love, and sharing it with those who are happy that’s the case. This West Texas watering hole has become somewhat of an oasis in the midst of the Texas craft beer industry, a refreshing take on the tradition of making great beer, which folks regularly travel from Abilene and San Angelo to get to.

The bar and brewery you’ll find in Rowena speaks of everything-Texas. Owner Mike McNeill was required to obtain both state and federal permits to open, making the process a lengthy one before he was able to officially brew beer to sell. His determination has resulted in a variety of unique varieties of craft beer, including Concho Cream Ale, Mesquite Bean, Pump Jack Porter, Kickapoo IPA, and the aforementioned Angelo Amber Ale.
