Houston’s KPRC’s Weather Dog, Radar, Has Died
In 2004, KPRC Channel 2 News in Houston picked out an adorable dog from a news segment they had about the Houston Humane Society. They named the Wheaten Terrier mix puppy Radar and he quickly became a part of the news family on and off the air.
Viewers wanted to see Radar, and KPRC delivered. They featured the pup in segments about dog training and had Radar assist meteorologist Frank Billingsley with his tasks. Billingsley said, “Whether it was raining cats and dogs or we were in the middle of the dog days of summer, Radar was there by my side.”
The “seater dog” lived with one of the news station’s managers and visited the studio and the Houston Weather Museum regularly. But in 2014, he developed cancer in his paw. Even though the tumor was removed, it slowed down his health along with his age becoming a factor.
To say the dog was beloved is an understatement. According to Click2Houston.com, “One of the best is the day Radar was in the news director’s office and started pawing at the door and barking. Someone went to check on him and he bolted for his seat at the anchor desk. It was time for his weather hit and he knew it, even though the others in the room hadn’t been paying attention to the clock.”
